Tips and Tricks for the Sprint PPC-6700 (PPC6700) and the Verizon XV6700

Before using any of these tips and tricks, please note that you can easily damage or brick (render useless) your phone. Make sure you backup EVERYTHING before doing ANYTHING, and don’t mess with registry hacks unless you know what you are doing. clickclickPOP! assumes NO RESPONSIBILITY for damage to your device. If you see something about HKEY in the tip, it’s likely a registry edit which can be dangerous to play around with. Also, many of these helpful tips came from the great community of 6700 users and mobile pros at http://www.pdaphonehome.com - if anyone would like their name by their tip (much props!), or would like a tip added or removed, just email me or post a comment and the bottom and I’ll take care of it. On to the 6700 tips and tricks!

- Front buttons don’t turn the device on. This is user-configurable. Go to Settings / Personal tab / Buttons / Lock tab to change this.

- Press-and-hold the IE hard button to launch the Wireless Manager app (thanks jglev for this tip!)

- I hate the way the volume slider works by default. Push and hold it down and it moves down once, then moves down rapidly. You let go and it keeps moving. Argh! You can change this. Go to Settings / Personal tab / Buttons / Up/Down Control tab. I set my Repeat rate to the slowest setting and that seems to turn repeat off. With that setting, you have to slide it and release it once for every notch you want to move up/down in adjusting the volume. I’d prefer a hard rocker switch instead of that “slider”, but whaddya gonna do?

- The Vision duration registry edit from the 6600 works on the 6700. This edit allows you to see the duration of your Vision connection along with a button to disconnect it. You see it in the bubble that is displayed when you tap the Vision icon.

Click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Click ControlPanel
Click Phone
[at this point, the buttom grey status bar should read \HKLM\ControlPanel\Phone'
Click the bottom menu 'edit'
Select new dword value

Change the value name to "Flags2" (no quotes).
Select the 'hexidecimal' button.
Type 10
Click ok.
You should now see in the 'name/data' section:

Flags2 16 (0x00010)

When done, reset the device.

-MP3/WMA/WAV for Ringtones:
Add media files into "\Windows\Rings\" folder

or

Use File Explorer and click and hold on media file and select "Set as Ringtone"

They will now be available in the phone preference section as well as the contact ringtone section.

Recommendation: Use only 15-20 second long clips for ringtones to save space. A good program to use is MP3Splitter. You can download it here

- WAV for SMS/EMAIL/Alerts/Alarms:
Add WAV files into "\Windows\" Folder

They will now be available in the Settings>Sounds and Notifications section.

Recommendation: Use only 5-20 second long clips for Alerts to save space.

- Is your PPC-6700 slowing down?
Well, we have the same problem as the PPC-6600 with duplicate notifications. When this happens, your PPC will start to slow down. Fix that problem with Scary Bears Check Notifications. It has a utility that will check for and delete the duplicates. There is also a utility to check and delete duplicates at startup. I noticed a nice improvement with this program.

- Speed Up Your Windows Mobile Pocket PC.

WOW my Pocket PC is fast! I just bumped into an old registry tweak that I have yet to use o_n Windows Mobile 2003. A foreign site todopocketpc had mentioned this and I was surprised I had not used it o_n my new install. o_nce I applied this reg tweak I immediately saw a difference in how fast my Windows Mobile Pocket PC responded. Today plugins load faster my Games folder loads faster. Its just an overall better experience. I would highly suggest backing up your Pocket PC before you try this as playing with your registry can cause problems if you do not know what you are doing. Protect your Pocket PC BACKUP!

If you need a registry editor, you can find a free o_ne at http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/regeditce.shtml

1. Open your registry editor o_n your Pocket PC
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\GDI\GLYPHCACHE\
3. Change the value of 'limit' from 8192 to 32768
4. Close registry editor and soft reset.

- Registry Hack for keyboard LEDs

Open you registry editing program and go to: HKEY_Current_User, then go to Control Panel, then to Backlight, then at the bottom you'll see a key that says QKEYLED TIMEOUT.

Modify that key and change the D Word from 10 to whatever seconds you want. I have mine set for 60. After you make your change click ok, then do a soft reset. It works for me! 60 seconds seems to be for me the best setting, 10 seconds was way to short. Hope this helps!

- From the factory... our phones have Audible and Action Engine installed. There is no option to remove these programs. Well using a primitive way, the easiest way to get rid of that crap is simple.

Using your computer or PPC, cruise on over the the Program Files section of your handheld. Next select the folders of Audible and Action Engine. Delete them.

Next, go to the "\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\" Folder and delete the shortcuts to those programs.

Pretty simple eh. The device has dependancies on either of these programs, so we can leave their registry settings in the registry no problem, its not going to hurt anything.

- I changed the glyph cache registry from 8192 to 16384 and now when I open my keypad, the switch to Landscape mode is significantly faster, almost instant. I'm sure that alone is worth the sacrifice of extra 1 MB of memory.

- Obvious one, but good for newbies....

SPB Pocket Plus and Resco File Explorer are both awesome programs. Both have plugins that can reside on the Today screen.

both are EXTREME memory hogs tho, especially if you run both at the same time. unless you need to run the today screen plugins, i recommend you disable them in the Settings>Today>Items screen.

Even with my device overclocked, it is still a noticable slowdown. With neither plugin on there, the device zips along on the today screen.

- for those who hates the "Message Sent" notification after sending an SMS, this is the steps to remove the bubble notification...this is the STEP by STEP method to do it in case some of you guys dont get it right...

1. First, you will need to download a Registry Editor to help you do it...

a good one will be the freeware PHM Registry Editor
or for those who got the Resco Explorer, you can use the Registry Editor that comes with it...

2. using the Registry Editor, navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Inbox

3. Next, click on Inbox (make sure the Inbox is highlighted) and select Edit, New Key

4. Name the New Key as "Settings"

5. Click on "Settings" (make sure the Settings is highlighted) and select Edit, New String Value

6. On "Value name:", key in SMSNoSentMsg and in "Value data", key in 1

7. Soft reset your device and test it with one SMS, and you will notice that the SMS Sent bubble is being disabled

- Always On Internet (Vision) Connection

< Untested. From http://shadowmite.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=866 >

- Change the "AlwaysOn" dword value from "0" to "1";
-- You may be asked for your Vision ID/PW. Just leave blank.
-- Warm Reset
Please let me know if this works for you. I'm still testing.

- The following post is a registry tweak to store the Pocket Internet Explorer data on your Mini-SD card instead of the internal storage. It currently results in a PocketIE error where it crashes and closes immediately after loading a page. Clearing the data using the options in PocketIE solves the problem temporarily.

ok here’s what i’ve figured out…
(i suggest backing up your registry before changing anything, as always)

find this key:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\

3 values are here:

\Windows\Profiles\Guest\History
\Windows\Profiles\Guest\Cookies
\Windows\Profiles\Guest\Temporary Internet Files

Create a folder on your storage card for all three and edit the values above:

I used:

\Storage Card\My Documents\IE\History
\Storage Card\My Documents\IE\Cookies
\Storage Card\My Documents\IE\Temporary Internet Files

After doing this, I ran PocketIE and browsed a few websites and it appears that the temporary files are now being stored on my storage card! Let me know how this works for you…

you should be able to clear your Windows\Profiles\Guest folder now…it had been saving my gmail login/pw and when i changed the registry to bounce it to the storage card, it no longer remembered…so it’s not using these folders anymore.

My last question would be about the folder \Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 - but that folder, for me, appears to be only taking about 20kb.

good luck…let me know how this works for you guys.

edit: i just found that, after making these changes, if you go to clear your temporary internet files through pocketIE, it will clear the storage card folders…if you want to clear your windows/profiles folder (which you should, to get all that space back), either do it before making these changes, or do a soft reset and use file explorer to delete the files right afterwards.

- here is a nice guide to tuning your SD card for the best performance

http://pocketpcmag.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=17921

- Well I found a quick workaround to this issue of the hardware IE button not going to the homepage you’ve set.

In the \windows\appbuttons folder you’ll see an “Internet Explorer.lnk” file. If open the file using Word mobile it contains:

28#”\Windows\iexplore.exe”
\windows\default.htm

Edit the file so that it just says:

28#”\Windows\iexplore.exe”

Close Word mobile, kill any running instance of IE and restart it using the hardware button. Should work now.

- I was wanting to use Voice Command to open a specific web site. For example I wanted to say “Open Weather” and it would go straight to my local forecast on www.weather.com.

To do it I:
1. Opened internet explorer, found my local forecast and saved it as a favorite.
2. Opened Windows Explorer and copied the internet shortcut I had created from the Windows\Favorites folder and pasted it in the Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder.
3. I renamed the shortcut to “Weather”

I can now use Voice Command to go directly to my forecast. Obiously this could be done with any website I visit on a regular basis (like ORB). I suppose if I create enough my programs folder will look pretty full, but with Voice Command I don’t really care so much.

- If you’re like me, you’ve noticed the battery door/cover on the back of the phone has a tendency to slide off with a bit of a push. No lock (DUH-MB!) to keep it on until you take out off.

While Egrips help to keep your phone from flying out of your hand, they can actually keep your battery door/cover from sliding off and becoming lost. Like mine did recently.

I discovered it was missing Wednesday morning before I went on duty. I looked all over my station, my ambulance, the vehicle bay, the employee parking lot, the offices, etc. I even looked all over my car. I spent all day Wednesday without it. I came home last night and looked all over the house. It wasn’t until this morning I made one more search of the car and found it way under the driver seat! (don’t ask…I don’t know how) Thank GOD the battery stays sungly in its compartment!

While the battery door/cover does have a tendency to slide off, an IMPROPERLY PLACED Egrip sticker enhances the possibility of it coming off.

HERE’S THE SIMPLE SOLUTION:

When placing one of the two biggest pieces from the Egrips pack onto the back of the phone, make DARN sure the top end is just below the camera lens (almost 1/3rd of the sticker), on the other side of the crack separating the battery door/cover from the phone body. Of course, the rest of the Egrip piece will fall onto the battery door/cover.

Now it appears the battery door/compartment doesn’t go ANYWHERE.

The only problem with this is immediate access to the battery. How often do we need that? Probably next to never, unless the battery croaks.

Do I worry about the Egrip sticker wearing out the Sprint PCS logo on the back? Hell no. Heaven knows how much a replacement battery door/cover costs and how hard it might be to obtain.

This should be pretty self explanatory but if anyone needs an example pic, let me know. I’m sure some of you have already figured this out, but I thought I’d share it as a bit of hindsight which may help others unwary of the battery door/cover weakness.

- “Pocket Internet Explorer Undercover as Internet Explorer 6.0!
Disguise your version of Pocket Internet Explorer Internet Explorer 6.0 running on Windows XP!

Many web sites that require encryption (such as banks and online retailers) don’t verify if your browser support high encryption, they just check the browser version.

This registry hack will make Pocket Internet Explorer identifies itself as Internet Explorer 6.0 running on Windows XP, which may let you connect to web site that check the browser version

NOTE - This hack will prevent web sites that provide Pocket PC specific content to be able to know you’re actually using a Pocket PC.

Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent \
Change the default value from “Mozilla/2.0″ to “Mozilla/4.0″.
Change the “Version” value from “MSIE 3.02″ to “MSIE 6.0″.
Change the “Platform” value from “Windows CE” to “Windows NT 5.1″.
Some web sites may just compare the user agent string, but if this is not enough, browse to the Post Platform\ sub key and delete the “240×320″ value that specifies screen size.
Pocket PC Registry Editors (Free!)
For a free registry editor for the Pocket PC, take a look at the PHM Registry Editor at http://www.phm.lu/Products/PocketPC/RegEdit/, or make life easier and check out RegKing (http://www.cewindows.net/applications/regking.htm) or Tweaks2k2 (http://www.pc-counselor.8m.com/downloads.htm) - these will carry out the tweaks for you!”

Now what I need is a way to make PIE works with the pop up boxes on my MLS website. I can log in now with the above hack but I can’t fully utilize the sit. For example I have to input an area code. I can type the area code into the box provided but then I have to hit a box that says”add area code” and when I click add it just sits there. Any ideas??? Is it a scripting issue??

edit: PS- when I click on the same box on IE on my laptop the bottom left of screen right above “Start” button first briefly displays a “http://xxxxxx.xxxxxxx.com/prop_search.asp” message and after I click on it the message displayed is “javascript:DoSearch(document.mainform,%201);”.

Any ideas on how to get this type of thing to work in PIE? Can I just change the javascript values in the registry??

Thanks!

- Found a great little program that’s free and doesn’t do anything. Let me explain-There’s been a few people complaining, me too, that the virtual keyboard will often keep popping up and getting in the way when you don’t need to be typing anything. Download NullKeyboard and it put adds a choice in the list of available input devices. It’s a keyboard that doesn’t do anything. More importantly it never pops up. When you actually need a virtual keyboard just pick something else.

- Fun with buttons

7. Soft reset your device and test it with one SMS, and you will notice that the SMS Sent bubble is being disabled

- Removal of unwanted programs and options to improve space /perform

Audible and Action Engine
- Using your computer or PPC, cruise on over the the Program Files section of your handheld. Next select the folders of Audible and Action Engine. Delete them.
- Next, go to the “\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\” Folder and delete the shortcuts to those programs.

SPB Pocket Plus & Resco File Explorer

- Programs Utilities to correct common issues

Unwanted keypress
-Mortsaverpe-2.0 (if put soft-power button while on phone and using BT headset, unit will come back on at end of call. If in holster this often results in you calling the person back and them eves dropping on you! I assume this program makes sure this doesn’t happen!)

Remove Speedtest files
- If you’re running a bunch of moblie speed tests, read this!
- Some using Sprite’s Space Detective to see how and where my RAM is being used. I just found about 18 mspeed files in my guest profile in the \Windows directory which don’t need to be there. Each of them were 600K, so deleting 18 of these got my \Windows Directory down from 75Mb to 65Mb.

wow i am so happy that i got this working correctly…i mentioned it in the remapping contacts soft button thread but i think it deserves a mention in this thread…

i have bound handyswitcher to my start menu hardware button…i figured i didn’t need the start menu nearly as much as i needed the ability to switch between and close programs with one hand…next, i was able to remap my calendar soft button to the start menu…thus regaining that lost hardware button (with the caveat that you can only access it from the today screen…but using handyswitcher’s minimize all (with one hand) gets me there)

as a recap…handyswitcher allows you to toggle between open programs…it also has buttons that allow you to minimize all, close all and close all except active…

version 2.5 will be available soon…they made it so you could properly use the 5way joystick to navigate the handyswitcher menu…attached is a 15-day preview/beta version of the 2.5 version which should be released soon, according to DinarSoft (current version is 2.2 and it works great except that the hardware button sometimes closes the program instead of switching to it…)

next, using this link
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=769373
i was able to remap my calendar button to open the start menu…i don’t use the calendar much and i can always run it one-handed through the today screen appointments plugin instead of using the soft button…

basically you install a program called mortrunner (free!) which allows you to make a file “startmenu.mortrun” that, when executed, will simulate a click/stylus press on a given point on the screen…in this case, “0,0″ hits the start menu button…it does not run in the background, so it won’t use extra memory…it just executes the command then closes. i bound the calendar soft button to this file…

as a result…i can always get to my start menu using the soft button or i can use handyswitcher to minimize all and then use the soft button.

delete hide
add Group and give value of 2(dec)

This ads the GPS icon to your connections tab.

- If you use the built in Windows Media Player, and are sick of the blue, alternative skins are available.

- Im not sure if any one mentioned this yet. I shut off my blinking LED by going:

Hkey_Local_Machine/Drivers/Builtin/AllLEDMgr

And change the Index value from 1 to 0

Then soft reset.

- One-Handed Dialing

Here’s a simple tip if you already know about it then I’m sorry but when I stumbled upon it its made dialing so much easier. Open the phone app by hitting the green phone button, then slide the phone keyboard open and use the numbers on the keypad to dial. Works like a charm and no need to que the red button either it will automatically show up as numbers.

- To change the Phone on and off sound since its not a choice in the Sounds program.

Go HKEY_CURRENT_USER/ControlPanel/
PhoneExtendedFunction/FlightModeOnOff

Change the directory of the Sound_on and Sound_off to the directory and name of the sound file you want to use.

- Speed up dialing on your 6700:

Turn off keypad tones:

Press green phone button
Bottom right “MENU”
OPTIONS
KEYPAD = OFF
OK

But remember one thing- If you turn the tones off, then you will lose your ability to send “TouchTones” by hitting certain digits. No dialing of extensions, PIN numbers etc.

- Found a good task switcher.

http://page.freett.com/todamitsu/TaskSwitchE.htm

1. Install
2. Start->Settings->Buttons
3. Set a hardbutton to the TaskSwitch+ program

each time you press the button, it loads the program, shows the WinXP style task switcher, then shuts the program down.. No more memory resident apps necessary! No more sluggish freezing or waiting for the soft X to work right. This works like a charm!

- After a bit of searching and reading I found the info on changing the default input method. I myself only like the phone pad but as we all know it defaults back to keyboard after a reset.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{51A2CB38-154E-4C92-A625-A83871C99EC2}

Then followed the directions from the thread:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sip\Change the “DefaultIm” value to the ClassID string of the input method you want to use as the default.

I then reset and viola, phone pad is my default even after a reset

- Here’s a really good description of how lithium ion batteries work, and the best way to care for them when used with your PPC-6700:

- if you double tap the red button on the keyboard, it keeps the function locked on. I don’t know if this is a repost but I figured it ouy tonight and figured I would share.

- Speaking of which, you guys should try Dynamo (http://www.aspecto-software.com/Dynamo/Dynamo.htm). This is an animated task switcher that also supports application close.

To close the application selected with the 5 way, just hold down the 5 way for a few seconds. The application will close, and the other windows will re-align themselves nicely. Another thing to note- initially Dynamo will assign itself to your camera button. Don’t panic though, as it is easy to re-assign it. First go to your button assignments in Settings, then re-assign your record button (could really be any button, but I wanted to use record) specifically to “None.” Once it is assigned to none, run Dynamo, or if it already running, press and hold the camera button to initialize it. You will see your active applications. Instead of clicking with the stylus on one of the applications, click and hold your stylus in the blue background area. You will see a menu pop-up where you can adjust your settings and re-assign the Dynamo button to the record button. Once assigned, you’re all set- anytime you want to switch applications, or close either your current or other running applications, hit record once, and Dynamo wil instantly display in its animated splendor.

- Google Mobile Optimizer

http://www.google.com/gwt/n

For example, the URL for the PPC-6700 forum is:

http://www.google.com/gwt/n?u=http%3…6forumid%3D174

The URL for this thread is:

http://www.google.com/gwt/n?u=http%3…readid%3D57061

I got both these URL’s by starting at:

http://www.google.com/gwt/n?u=http%3…aphonehome.com

I then clicked on the + signs to open some initially hidden sections, that after a few clicks, got me to forums, and from there it was a piece of cake.

- Basically, in Pocket Windows Media Player you can assign a button to toggle the screen on/off in the options -> buttons, while you have something playing. I assigned the “Enter” button, aka the joystick click, and it works very well!

- SPB Pocket Plus (build 3.0.4) is working like a charm on my xv6700. It allows you to assign a command or open an application by configuring the hardware buttons. It is much more configurable than the wm5 button assignment feature under Start/Settings/Buttons.

I have it set up so the OK button actually closes an application vs. the wm5 default (OK/Close) which simply minimizes it.

Very handy for all of you that like to actually close applications when you’re done with them to conserve your program memory.

- I use Orb, so I figured I’d do a little test of the three big browsers and their speeds. (this applies to all users of web browsing) I did this test using the WiFi connection at my house - not EVDO - to get a reliable and repeatable data rate. I have a PC upstream speed of 900kbps, and on my laptop I usually get a downstream of 1.5mbps with the built in speed test of Orb (in reality my connection surges to 5mbps when connected to Usenet). Pocket Internet Explorer was able to connect to Orb with just a mere 177kbps-270kbps, repeatabley, though I have seen seen it has high as 400kbps with EVDO in the past. Minimo got an astounding 1.9mpbs, but it did so with literally about 100 security certificate warnings. its still a beta, so hopefully they will fix that. the new Opera beta was able to connect at a very fast 1.4mbps, and did so flawlessly. so moral of the story: if you use Orb, use Opera, and even if you don’t use Orb Opera seems to load much faster for normal pages (and it might mitigate having to hack PIE to show as v6.0 to log into secure web sites like banks. The only catch with Opera and Orb is that you have to manually open the stream after clicking on the link, which isn’t a big deal as it only requires one extra click for over a megabit of bandwidth gain! hope this helps…

you could always just set the orb speed manually instead of using the speed test - that would avoid the need for opera…the streaming is through wmp10 or tcpmp so the bandwidth issue is not related to the browser - you could also do the speed test again manually (look at the bottom of the my.orb.com page) and it usually is more accurate that way…i log into orb, it does the auto speed test, and then i do a speed test again to get a more accurate result.

- PPC 6700 via the CDMA Cell Modem is outside most home or corporate routers. Home routers can be configured by thier owners to port forward 3389 and/or 5900 so you can access home computers running Remote Desktop and/or VNC Server.

To get to computer inside of a corporate router, typically you need a VPN program to get past the corporate router. PPC 6700 has a built-in PPTP VPN which works with Windows 2003 Server. For Cisco VPN I have purchased the
http://www.bluefiresecurity.com/orders/
$79 Bluefire VPN Client which works with WM5 and the PPC 7600. This may require some manual configuration so that the client and router security settings match.

Once you VPN through the Firewall then you can use Remote Desktop or VNC to initiate a remote session.

http://www.logmein.com
Has a free Remote Client that easily installs on PC and PPC. It even gets through Firewall without VPN. Try It!

- This is not completely compatible with WM5, but will work in certain situations. Use this tip with that in mind. I have e-mailed the developer to release a WM5 ver, but have not heard back.***

When I used to run PPC 2002, 2003 and older, there was a small app called No Plug-ins Today by ictinus. I tracked it down, and found the url.

http://www.ictinus.com/NoPluginsToday/

It’s main purpose is to remove all today plugins from the today screen…It really enhances battery life, and cleans up the screen nicely.

I loaded it, assigned it to a soft button using a registry tweak program, and it worked…mostly. The calendar did not disappear. There mist be some sort of discrepancy in registry data from 2002, 2003, and WM5. All of my other plugins did disappear, however. As a work-around, I purchased SPB Diary, and integrated it as a plug-in into SPB Pocket Plus. When SPB disappeared, so did the offending bit of the calendar. This may work with other today replacements, Snoopsoft, etc…but I do not know. See screen-shots below for an idea.

This tweak greatly increases battery life. With no use, the phone will last 3 or more days!

- increase camera frames per second:

Didint see this one on the tips and tricks page:

Supposed to increase the quality of the video the camera takes:

HKey Local Machine\Software\HTC\Camera\ReParam\MP4Large (or Medium or Small).
Change the FramRate value from 10 to 19
*don’t exceed 19

- To change the softkeys on the Today screen

The left-hand softkey settings are at ‘HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Today\Keys\112′, the right-hand softkey

settings are at ‘HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Today\Keys\113′

The ‘Default’ string value can be changed to whatever text you wish to have displayed

The ‘Open’ string value can be changed to the program you wish to run when the softkey is pressed

For example, to change the left-hand softkey to start the Messaging program (text messages and emails) you would set:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Today\Keys\112\(Default) = Messaging
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Today\Keys\112\Open = \windows\tmail.exe

how do i get the \ on the keybord? i can only get /. i even created a word document on my computer and tried to copy paste but it dosnt let me paste.

Thought this was a must have for those whos nights run into mornings and visa versa. The srings and values are case sensitive.

- If your bored of your background picture, and you want to have something different, I came across a website that has free background images with many hi-res pictures. They have quite a few to choose from.

http://www.pocketpcscreens.com

- I’ve decided to post some sites that I came across that some of you might be interested in. I’ve listed 3 Portals and some PPC Friendly Sites I have saved in my favorites.

I use to use AVANTGO on my Dell Axim, just because I had no way to connect to internet live. Since I’ve owned my 6700, there is no better way to surf with a ppc then with PocketPC friendly websites….it beats having to scroll left and right to read contents.

Portals contain categories such as sports, news, games, entertainment, etc. Once you select the category, you will have a list of sites. Just click on the site you want to view, and if it is something you are interested in visiting, just put it in your mobile favorites. I personally checked them out using my PC at home, and just placed the ones I liked in my favorites under mobile favorites which sync to my 6700. I have also placed a few of my favorites sites below the portal links.

NOTE: THESE PORTALS ARE POCKETPC FRIENDLY AS WELL.

PORTAL #1
PORTAL #2
PORTAL #3

HERE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVORITES I’VE ADDED…..

amazon.com - Alot of us shop here.
eBAYGotta love eBAY !!!
Handango.com - Always got something you spend money on.
ESPN - Go Steelers !!!
GOOGLE I love this one !!!
Sprint Users - I haven’t played around with this site yet.
Map Quest A MUST HAVE !!!!
FedEx - Track your FEDERAL EXPRESS packages
UPS - Track your UPS Shippments
PocketPC Media - For Media on the Go !!!
Windows Media
Pocket Movies
Yellow Pages - OH YEAH !!! Dont you to pay for assistance for a phone number?
White Pages - Currently not working, but extremely handy when it does.
Game Rankings Mobile - Stay upto date on games & game reviews all consoles… xbox, pda, pc, etc.
The Gadgeteer Mobile
Pen Computing - Interesting stuff… hmmm Cingular 8100 competing with 6700 ???
PocketPC Thoughts - More news and articles on PocketPC’s.
PDAPHONEHOME - I wished it was PPC friendly.

If any of you have any other portals sites that might list more “PocketPC Friendly Sites” please do post. I’m always looking to add new ones.

If your interested in more let me know and I’ll post a few more I have on my list.

Hope this makes your PPC-6700 that much more enjoyable

- Check out Skweezer. it shrinks non pda friendly sites into quick loading pda friendly size. With free registration you can save favorites to skweezer. It is particularly good with Opera. In skweezer I went to Advanced Preferences and checked everything.

- I reprogrammed my explorer button to email. Advantage: if you have more than one email account, you can hit it multiple times to scroll through your different mailboxes and sms. Really convenient, us VC to open explorer

- If the backlight setting for external power goes to “0″ (like when you switch batteries), after turning on the 6700, just hold down the top power button for about 2-3 seconds and that will kick the backlight setting up to 100 % again.

- Making PIE you Default Internet Browser

***** Warning - Always backup your registry before making changes *****

1. Backup your registry
2. Open Regedit Program
3. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
4. FOLDERS TO MODIFY “htmfile, htmlfile, http and https”
5. Go to DefaultIcon Folder “this is in all folder’s listed above”
6. Change value to ( \Windows\iexplore.exe, -101 )
7. Save changes and go back one folder
8. Go to Shell Folder
9. Then go to Open Folder
10. Then go to Command Folder
11. Change default value to ( \Windows\iexplore.exe %1 )
12. Do this for Folders “htmfile, htmlfile, http and https”
13. Soft reset is not required for changes to become effective but you
should do one anyway

There may be more associations but these were the ones preventing me from clicking on links and getting program opening errors. Good luck.

- Using Sprint PPC6700 as a BT Wireless Modem

Requirements:
* BT adapter on your Laptop or Desktop
* Sprint Power Vision - EVDO services
* Username and Password for Vision Services

If you do not know what your vision username is log onto
your sprint account and go to my personal information.
Click modify on Power Vision Username and write down your
username and cancel on changes. Change your password to
something you’ll remember. After changing your password
turn on your PPC6700 and go to your phone. Click on menu
and then go to options. Go to the Services tab and highlight
Internet and click get settings. This will update you phone
with the new password.

On your PC or Laptop go to My Bluetooth Places and pair your PPC6700
with your computer. Do a search for available services on your PPC6700.
It should find a Bluetooth Dial up Adapter. If it doesn’t make sure
you PPC’s Bluetooth discovery mode is checked. This allows other
devices to detect services avalilable on that device. Once it finds
the bluetooth dialup adapter right click on it and click connect. It will
bring up a dial up manager which will ask for username, password and
number to dial. The number to sprint vision is #777. Now you can click
connect and it will attempt to utilize the DUN modem in your PPC6700.
Sometimes it will not intialize the modem first go around so just click
retry.

This method does not require you to use the wireless modem application
on your PPC6700. That application is good for connecting via USB but
does not work well with BT. Also that method allows Sprint network
the ability differentiate between using your device as a wireless
modem versus normal cellular line connection. Using the wireless modem
application requires a special sprint plan on top of Power vision. My
method is a work around. That special sprint plan I’m referring to is called
“phone as wireless modem plan”

Warning**** This method may incur additional data charges from what I was told by the advance technical support team because currently they are not capable of knowing the method to which you connect so they monitor site locations you hit to determinine if that’s a site that you PIE would not be able to access due to it’s limitations. This can be battled as I did when I told them about third party internet browers that I’m running that allows users to access virtually any website out there. good luck

- Making Voice Command and BT Headset a little easier

I was getting irritated with having to push the headset button to get a tone before using VC. I found that just pushing the hardkey (in most cases the “windows” button) I could say my command to the phone and then it would open the BT gateway as the call initiated. Maybe not the biggest thing in the world but makes my life a little easier.

- Getting WLAN to recognize home network

I had a bunch of trouble getting the 6700 to recognize my home wireless network. I checked through the forums (search for SSID!). I had the router set to mixed (B & G), no encryption, open, SSID broadcast disabled. I added a new wireless network and typed in the SSID - still no connection.

I removed the previously added connection and set the SSID to be broadcast. Sure enuff, the 6700 recognized the network but would still not connect.

Here’s the tip - I did a soft reset. Now the connection was made successfully. I reset my SSID to be not broadcast and it still works fine.

- I set thsi up a long time ago for my own personal browsing from my wi-fi enabled HP5400…
It’s free (no ads or anything like that) can be surfed by any device that supports plain HTML pages (phones or PDA’s):

Enjoy.
