Pulling out of Handango

Saturday, October 28th, 2006

Chances are most of our readers are aware of a morally reprehensible decision taken by the software store Handango regarding the developer account of Omnisoft, a small Pocket PC software developer….

Windows Live Alerts added

Friday, September 29th, 2006

We’ve added support for Windows Live Alerts to PocketGamer, so if you prefer to receive your news updates through MSN Messenger or your cellphone, you can add us to your list by following this link. The Windows Live website seems to be pretty unstable at the moment, so don’t be surprised if it doesn’t load….

Routine site maintenance

Sunday, July 30th, 2006

Please accept my apologies if the site appears to be running slowly tonight - I’ve set the server to re-index a few things (OK, the entire drive…) and it’s pegging the system at 100% CPU load. Everything should be back to normal tomorrow morning. If you find things unbearably slow, please do post a comment and let me know about it, and I will see if I can find a different solution!…

DNS fun

Saturday, July 8th, 2006

I’ve decided to let the PocketGamer server handle its own DNS… however, it appears that in order to get it to work I’ve had to set the domain to use our server without having a chance to independently test it. So, if you happen to visit tomorrow and get a 404 error, we are still here and I’ll be trying desperately to fix the problem! …

Time for a new server

Tuesday, July 4th, 2006

You may have noticed that, once again, PocketGamer was down last night. …

Server problems

Tuesday, June 6th, 2006

If you’re reading this, it’s a good sign because it means the server is alive again. We’re currently experiencing difficulties with the mail service (in particular, the virus scanner), which is crashing and taking the server down with it….

Bot adverts

Saturday, June 3rd, 2006

I’m sure you’ve noticed that the number of automated bot postings on web forums is undergoing somewhat of a renaissance at the moment. We’ve always tried to keep an “open door” policy for guest posts, but it’s taking me the better part of 30 minutes every day to clean up spam items. …

News will resume tomorrow

Tuesday, May 23rd, 2006

Regular news posts will resume tomorrow. I’m sorry about the inconsistency over the last week or so, but my final exam is tomorrow and I’m free after that. Many thanks to Sponge for picking up the slack and my apologies to everyone for the inconvenience. If you think I’ve missed anything important, please feel free to submit it again….

That time again…

Monday, May 15th, 2006

Once again I’m plunged into university exams, which unfortunately means that news postings on PocketGamer are likely to suffer over the next fortnight. Please forgive any tardiness and accept my apologies for any inconvenience!…

Catch up with missed games

Monday, May 8th, 2006

Since the games scene is a bit slow at the moment I’d like to catch up on some of the older titles we might have missed over the years (it does happen, sadly). If you know of a game we’ve never featured on the site, please get in touch or post a reply in the Comments Thread for this news item….

PM message limit increased

Wednesday, May 3rd, 2006

I’ve increased the private message storage limit from 10 to 100 messages, as I gather that some people have been experiencing difficulties. I’m afraid I only discovered this today, and it seems that it was a default setting in vBulletin which we overlooked. My apologies for any inconvenience caused!…

Guest posting disabled

Wednesday, April 19th, 2006

Unfortunately it seems some blasted spam bots have decided to flood PG’s forums with over 50 threads in the past day. I’ve done my best to get rid of a few, but there are just too many to do by hand. As of result, we’ve had to disable guest posting for the time being. This shouldn’t have an effect on any readers, just those who wish to comment. Registering is easy, and unlike these damned bots, we won’t spam your e-mail….

Have you had your Atari today?

Monday, April 10th, 2006

Stella, the multi-platform Atari 2600 emulator has been updated to 2.2, with ports for Linux, Mac OS X, Windows, GP2x, and of course, our PocketPCs….

Site downtime

Sunday, March 12th, 2006

As I’m sure you’ve noticed, the PocketGamer server has been getting increasingly unstable over the last few months. Today a system file became corrupted, taking the server down with it. Fortunately, I’ve managed to solve the problem for now, but I think that this is a possible sign that our hard disk (which now has over 33000 hours on it) might be on its way out, and hence I’m planning a move to a brand new server in the next few weeks….

PocketGamer needs reviewers!

Wednesday, March 1st, 2006

I’ve noticed that we seem to be a bit short of reviewers - Eric Pankoke seems to be doing all the work! If you’d like to review Pocket PC games for the site, please do get in touch with me at david@pocketgamer.org, letting me know a bit about you and providing a short sample of your writing (100-200 words). …

Site downtime

Monday, February 27th, 2006

I have absolutely no idea what caused the downtime last night - it looked like MySQL fell over, which then took down httpd, which was promptly followed by the suicide of Ensim’s services….

Minor server update

Friday, February 24th, 2006

I’ve made some changes to the server in an attempt to make the site load faster, and so far they appear to have worked. However, there’s always the possibility that I’ve broken something else while doing this, so if you notice a problem and think it’s related, do please let me know!…

I’m away…

Thursday, February 9th, 2006

I’m heading up to Kirroughtree in Scotland to go mountain biking for the next few days. As I’m not even sure whether they have electricity at the Yoof Hostel, site updates are probably going to be few and far between…. With any luck, Sponge will hold the fort while I’m away but I won’t be around to answer email or deal with any site related queries. Apologies for any inconvenience!…

Would you like news emailed to you?

Tuesday, February 7th, 2006

Something that seems pretty popular over at Pocket PC Thoughts is their email blast feature. To shamelessly quote their description, “rather than having to come to this site to get your news & views, it will be emailed directly to you based on the criteria below. The email will arrive as a nicely formatted HTML or plain-text message, depending on your settings. You can filter out topics that you don’t want, or more precisely, only get the email notifications for specific category of postings.”…

New design

Friday, January 20th, 2006

Over the past day or so I’ve been transitioning PocketGamer to a new template, which should bring the site into the 20th century and make it quite a bit faster to load. ;-)…

MSN Messenger help needed!

Sunday, January 15th, 2006

I’ve just changed the email address used for MSN Messenger, only something seems have gone wrong somewhere. I can sign in, but all my contacts appear as offline. As MSN is my primary method of communication with the Pocket PC community (and I don’t have a backup of the contact list), this is a bit of a problem……

Merry Christmas everybody!

Saturday, December 24th, 2005

Just thought I’d wish everyone a Merry Christmas from Pocketgamer, and give an excuse for slow news updates the next couple of days …

Are you interested in seeing Smartphone news?

Tuesday, December 13th, 2005

By now I’m sure most of you are aware that Microsoft plans, in the next few years, to merge the SmartPhone and Pocket PC platforms in the new iteration of Windows Mobile, codenamed “Photon”….

MySQL problems

Saturday, December 10th, 2005

We appear to have corrupted a database or two. I’m working on fixing the problem now, but it looks like it’s going to take a while. In the meantime, please accept my apologies and enjoy PocketGamer without ads. :-)…

Scheduled downtime

Monday, November 28th, 2005

Due to some routine server housekeeping tonight you may find PocketGamer slow or inaccessible at times. Any outage shouldn’t be for more than a minute or two while the server reboots. My apologies for any inconvenience….
