O2’s Xda Orbit Launches in the UK

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

O2’s version of the HTC Artemis (Xda Orbit) has just launched in the UK, with ALK CoPilot included in the box. With GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth all packed into that sleek black shell, it’s a pretty sweet device, though the 200MHz processor may be enough to make you look elsewhere.

The Next Generation of XScale: Monahans Is Here!

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

“The PXA3xx family of processors delivers improved performance and extended battery life, enabling advanced video and audio capabilities. Wireless Intel SpeedStep® with MusicMax technology provides intelligent power management, enabling varying power states so users can listen up to 30 hours of MP3s on their handsets without sacrificing battery life. Intel VideoMax technology in the PXA3xx family of application processors supports high-performance video capabilities, and will continue delivering improved resolution with future versions of the PXA3xx family of processors.”

Marvell, who on November 8 completed the acquisition of Intel’s cellular and application processor line (which includes the XScale processors widely used in Windows Mobile devices), have just unveiled their latest generation of mobile processors. The three new processors can be summarised as follows:

?PXA320 (Monahans-P)- 1.2GHz scalable down to 806MHz, general applications processor;
?PXA310 (Monahans-LV) - multimedia processor, supposedly capable of 30fps H.264 playback in VGA resolutions; and
?PXA300 (Monahans-L) - the budget line

Both -L and -LV variants can scale down to 624MHz. All three are available in sample form or are already shipping in volume - Marvell expects production to be in full swing by the first quarter of 2007, and the first devices sporting these processors should appear about the same time. Marvell’s making a lot of promises here - faster processing, lower power consumption, and more transparent frequency scaling. Whichever of these advancements these processors happen to fulfill, this is a big leap forward, the first in over three years in terms of processing speed and power. Faster web-browsing, faster video (hopefully getting rid of the need to transcode video) - I sense lots of fun times ahead! Very Happy

E-TEN X500 Approved by FCC

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

“The good news? ETEN has humbly submitted its thin, sexy X500 glofiish Pocket PC for the FCC’s approval as the “OX500.” The better news? According to the test report, GSM is in the box on both the 850 and 1900MHz bands.”

E-TEN’s slim quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE device with GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth has been approved by the FCC as the OX500, though that doesn’t necessarily mean that a US carrier will be picking it up anytime soon. But keep your eyes open. Wink

Live Pictures of the i-Mate PDAL and JAQ3

    Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

“As you know by now the i-mate JAQ was so ugly that even a mother couldn’t love it. Not to i-mate’s credit they are releasing a much more polished device that actually could pass for good looking…I just don’t see the appeal in this phone even for the lower price point they are targeting besides it being slim.”

*Yawwwnnn*. Sorry, couldn’t resist Wink The quote above says it all - but if you’re really interested go on and have a look :devilboy: The (blurry) PDAL photos are here, and JAQ3s’ are here.

A Look Back at the HP Jornada 928 PPC Phone

    Tuesday, November 28th, 2006

It?s always fun to take a step back in time ? it helps us seen how far we?ve come in technology, while showing us what still hasn?t changed. Mitchell Oke from Gear Diary takes a fresh look at the HP Jornada 928, one of the first handhelds to have cell phone connectivity, released back in early 2002.

It?s interesting that the J928 uses a processor that many newer devices still use today:… Read More

Mobile Power Options from Pocket PC Techs

    Friday, November 24th, 2006

“If there’s one thing that every Windows Mobile device owner wishes they could forget about its battery life. It doesn’t matter if you use your device for productivity, gaming, music, video, or email ? everything takes power. Who wants to think about recharging their devices? There’s nothing exciting about that ? the fun comes in using them! Sadly, battery life still isn’t at the point where a single charge will last weeks, so until that happens we need to have strategies in place for getting as much use out of our Windows Mobile Smartphones and Pocket PCs as possible. If you’re the kind of user who recharges daily from home or work, you may not have to think about battery life much ? even a heavily used Pocket PC or Smartphone should last a full day. If you do any traveling though, or don’t recharge your device every day, there are some power accessories that will make your battery life last a lot longer. There are many companies making accessories like the ones I mention in this article, but I’ve selected Pocket PC Techs accessories to look at for two reasons: they’re very high quality, and they just happen to have sent a few of them my way.”

Isn’t it sad how our devices never seem to have enough juice? It’s going to take a while before battery technologies progress, so while you wait for that to happen, you’ll probably need an accessory or two to keep your device going. Pocket PC Techs’ mobile power options are a perfect fit. Our own Jason Dunn has written an overview of the company’s offerings, so if you’re interested in learning more about them, head over to The Two Inch View.

Wifi Enabled HDD Enclosure: Any Takers?

    Friday, November 24th, 2006

A Singapore company is developing a new wifi HDD enclosure. So what’s new, you may ask? It’s designed to be portable, with a rechargeable battery that would give it up to 2-4hrs of continuous access time - which is really good if they can actually do it. I can’t quite make out if this can function as a wireless AP, but the company claims up to 8 people can wirelessly access the HDD at the same time. The device is compatible with any device on the 802.11b/g standards, and will take any IDE/ATA HDD in 1.8″ or 2.5″ form factors. The projected retail launch date will be in early April, but now news yet on price or availability. So, any takers?

    Thursday, November 23rd, 2006

Gigabyte has introduced the GSmart i120 (pictured above), which packs an Intel PXA272 416MHz CPU, 64MB RAM, 256MB ROM, support for tri-band GSM/GPRS (note, no EDGE or 3G), Bluetooth 1.2 (not 2.0, unfortunately), 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, a 2.1-megapixel camera, a miniSD slot, a 2.4″ 262K-colour QVGA display, and Windows Mobile 5.0 (with AKU 3.3). Add a multi-standard TV tuner and FM tuner, with support for recording, as well as a dedicated numeric keypad, and things start to look interesting. If not for a few shortcomings, it’d be a killer device. A press release and additional pictures are available after the break. … [more]

    Wednesday, November 22nd, 2006

Yesterday’s O2 Xda Flame news seemed to tickle the fancy of more than just a few of you. You asked for more information, and here it is!

What you already know: The beast comes packed with an Intel XScale PXA270 520MHz CPU, 64MB RAM, 2GB ROM, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, an NVIDIA GoForce 5500 GPU, a 3.6″ VGA display, TV-out functionality, SRS Mobile HD surround sound support, USB On-The-Go, and a 2.0-megapixel camera. What you don’t know (but now know): It includes Bluetooth (yes, you had your doubts, but it’s there), tri-band 3G connectivity, a flash for the primary camera, a secondary camera for video calling, a microSD slot, an FM tuner, an infrared port, and Windows Mobile 5.0. The capacity of the battery is still being finalized, but at the moment, it’s sitting at 1,600mAh.

    Symbol Preparing MC35 for Q1, 2007

    Wednesday, November 22nd, 2006

“Dubbed the MC35, the handheld is said to be a “durable, lightweight… all-in-one enterprise communication device”, according to company blurb sent our way this week. Alas, the information - from a source in a position to be familiar with the company’s plans - didn’t include a full specification sheet, but the MC35 is thought to contain full mobile phone functionality and a built-in GPS receiver. It will run Windows Mobile software, almost certainly version 5.0. We’d expect Bluetooth to be part of the spec too.”

It’s not everyday you see a rugged handheld that’s well, not so brick-like. According to the Reg, we’ll be seeing the MC35 next February, complete with phone functionality, GPS, Bluetooth, and Windows Mobile 5.0. Non-English and Wi-Fi versions will appear in the months after. Way to go, Symbol, or should we say, Motorola?

    CHT 9100 Coming Soon

    Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

“Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) is expected to launch its second own-brand HSDPA (high speed downlink packet access) handset, the CHT9100, in Taiwan on December 1, according to market sources. The CHT9100 will be similar in function as its predecessor, the CHT9000, with both models running Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 5.0 OS and sporting a download speed of 1.8 Mbps, the sources said, noting that the CHT9100 will not be equipped a QWERTY keyboard as the CHT9000 does.”

Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) is readying the CHT 9100 for release in a week. Not much is known about this device, other than the fact that it’s manufactured by HTC, is HSDPA-enabled, and does not have a QWERTY keyboard. We’re betting on it being the HTC Trinity. We’ll let you know next month.

    E-TEN Announces the glofiish M700

    Monday, November 20th, 2006

If you were following news last week, you would have heard about rumours of an M700 from E-TEN. This time, it’s official. Much like its pal, the X500, it features quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE connectivity, Bluetooth, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, GPS (SiRFstar III) with TMC, an FM radio, an integrated camera, and Windows Mobile 5.0, except the M700 has the added bonus of a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. No 3G support, it seems, but it still looks like a great all-in-one device. Interested in picking one up? Expect it to appear in authorized stores this month. A copy of the press release can be found after the break. … [more]

Just Mobile RoKy Bluetooth Fabric Keyboard

    Monday, November 20th, 2006

“Just Mobile RoKy, the lightweight and flexible keyboard designed for mobile computing devices uses Bluetooth connectivity, is 100% fabric, water-repellent, and comes with a mobile phone/PDA stand. With a pair of AAA battery allows you up to 10 hours of usage.”

While I have my doubts about the usability of something like this (you need a flat surface to type on, and tactile feedback would be poor), I have to admit you can really take this anywhere - it’s even water-repellent! No information yet on pricing or availability.
