2700G-enabled games for 7 euros

Sunday, July 30th, 2006

As spotted in Werner Ruotsalainen’s blog, if you live in Western Europe and happen to own a 2700G enabled Pocket PC such as the X50v or X51v, you can pick up both Enigmo and Stuntcar Extreme for just seven euros for the pair. As far as I know neither of these games were supplied with the Pocket PCs; with Dell instead preferring to offer them as a “Games” CD for extra cash….

Routine site maintenance

Sunday, July 30th, 2006

Please accept my apologies if the site appears to be running slowly tonight - I’ve set the server to re-index a few things (OK, the entire drive…) and it’s pegging the system at 100% CPU load. Everything should be back to normal tomorrow morning. If you find things unbearably slow, please do post a comment and let me know about it, and I will see if I can find a different solution!…

Subsembly Password Generator 1.0 Released

Saturday, July 29th, 2006

“Come up with new passwords quickly and easily by using the SubsemblyŽ Password Generator on your Windows Mobile device. According to your preference, the application suggests passwords that are very secure or that are readable and easy to remember. Whatever you choose, the actual cryptographic strength and thus the security of the password is clearly shown. The Subsembly Password Generator is Freeware.”

Password generators can sure come in handy when you have to assign passwords to users who don’t always chose the best password. While $DG@Z23a91 might be a pain for them to remember, it works well from a security angle. Subsembly has just released their freeware password generator, so if you don’t already have an application with a password-generator built in, check it out. Your users will simultaneously love and hate you for it!

News that Matters: Friday Evening Edition

Well, well… three quick news blurps to end the day…

First off, there is an update to the rumoured Windows Mobile Treo for GSM. There is even a photo! Remember that this is going to be a Palm product running Windows Mobile for Pocket PCs, much like the Treo 700w but supports UMTS (3G) for the GSM networks. (The current Treo… Read More

ORSiO Pocket PC Phone Edition Leaked?

Friday, July 28th, 2006

“Thanks to an anonymous source we’ve been provided with some rather interesting and grainy shots of some confidential paperwork regarding a new project by ORSiO. They seem to be releasing a Pocket PC Phone Edition which looks similar to the O2 XDA Atom and HP iPAQ rw6828!”

Ah, nothing like blurry photos and strange company names to spark speculation. Wink MSMobileNews has some details on an upcoming Pocket PC Phone Edition from ORSiO (who?). The goods? An Intel Bulverde 520MHz processor, 64MB RAM, 192MB ROM, a 2.7″ 262K-colour QVGA display, a 2.0-megapixel camera, a miniSD slot, and Windows Mobile 5.0.

Mobinaute Reviews the Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket LOOX T830

Friday, July 28th, 2006

Contemplating a Pocket LOOX T830? Mobinaute has written a picture-rich review for your reading pleasure. And if you can’t assimilate a word of French, this Babel Fish translation may help you out, and it’s surprisingly tolerable! Back to the device, that wasted screen space (note the larger than usual black border around the viewable area) is still a turn-off, in my opinion. Do you agree?

Samsung Adds Beef: 8GB MMCplus Card

Friday, July 28th, 2006

“Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world leader in advanced memory technology, announced today that it has developed the industry’s highest density MMC card (popular removable MultiMediaCard for portable electronics) based on its most advanced MLC (multi-level cell) NAND flash memory. It also has developed the highest performing MMC card, based on SLC (single-level cell) NAND flash, in rounding out its large portfolio of MMC memories. With added density and higher performance, the new Samsung MMCplusTM cards are designed to greatly enhance user convenience for a variety of mobile applications. Based on Samsung’s 8-gigabit (Gb) NAND flash memory, the MMCplus card will be introduced with an 8-gigabyte (GB) density, allowing it to store 2,000 MP3 music files or eight hours of DVD-quality movies. The 8GB card will be part of a full line up of MLC-based MMCplus cards that also will include 1GB, 2GB, and 4GB offerings.”

It wasn’t too long ago that we were looking at 4GB SDHC cards. Well, feast your eyes on this 8GB MMCplus card from Samsung. Unlike SDHC, MMCplus is backward-compatible, so there’s a good chance that this thumb-sized behemoth could work with existing MMC-capable Pocket PCs.

TextMaker 2006 Beta

Friday, July 28th, 2006

“When TextMaker was released for the Pocket PC three years ago, it was an overnight sensation: a full-featured word processor with the capabilities of a desktop word processor and perfectly adapted to Pocket PCs. If you thought there wouldn’t be a way to improve on TextMaker 2002, think again… TextMaker 2006 for Pocket PCs is here and offers a huge array of improvements.”

If you go to their site, you’ll see a list of at least 18 new features in TextMaker 2006, including the ability to open files from OpenOffice.org, the addition of an AutoShapes drawing later and much more. The current beta version is free but expires August 31, 2006. At that point, they will either release the final product or a newer beta with a later expiration date.

Hosting Quake 3 From Your PPC?!?!

Friday, July 28th, 2006

“A very interesting video has just been posted here, along with some config files, showing how the Acer N50 Premium (with 128M RAM) runs the server and the game. It may be worth checking out if you’d liek to play the game in multiplayer.”

FINALLY, I can now host Q3 games off of my Pocket PC - something I honestly can’t tell you how many times I’ve wished I can do Mr. Green Seriously, while this might not be the most practical use of your Pocket PC (Get a spare computer for this job!), it is extremely geeky and thus worthy of a post. What other tasks do you think we should investigate doing on a PPC? I’m thinking a low-level mail server… Smile

4GB SD Card for $$71?

Friday, July 28th, 2006

I have never heard of an “A-Data” card, but you can get one for $70.95 and it has a 4GB capacity. Shocked I don’t really need one that large for my Pocket PC - my 2GB card has plenty of room left on it. My digital camera, on the other hand… Very Happy
