Real Time Strategy Game Machines at War Released to Open Beta

Friday, June 29th, 2007

“Command an army of forces across the battlefield with ease in this real time strategy game. You are challenged to construct an epic war machine and use it to become a dominating world power. Machines at War features a random map system so every game you play is unique and poses new challenges. Build bridges to cross water, mow down forests to clear a path to the enemy, build walls to defend your position, track tread marks left by enemy tanks to their base, hide under trees for an ambush attack, these are just some of the unique game play elements available.”

Isotope 244 has just released their real time strategy game Machines at War as a public beta. How can you not love a description like this: “Each unit leaves unique tread marks and wreckage when destroyed. You can also build bridges and mow down trees with ease!” After downloading it, be sure to give them feedback. Also, Werner “Menneisyys” Ruotsalainen has already posted a review of it in our forums.

Review: QuickLook: callpod chargepod

Friday, June 29th, 2007

Robbie writes, “If you’re like me, you have have a mass of cords resembling a bowl of noodles stashed under your desk. I never intended it to be this way, it just sort of… happened. Maybe Murphy’s law of cords played a role: two independent cords/wires at opposite ends of the room will find a way to get tangled together, given enough time. Either intentional or not, tangled cords are a pain. Enter… Read More

Thank Goodness - Good Mobile Messaging Suite 5.0 Released

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

“Good Mobile Messaging 5.0, is a best-of-both-worlds tool that “gives IT everything they could ever want” in terms of centrally controlling any policy over remote devices, while “not impairing users’ ability to get stuff done on the smartphone.” To a large degree that means managing applications. The new software allows IT departments to require all devices to use mandatory applications, such as virus-protection software, and to ban the launch of blacklisted applications not meeting company guidelines. Good 5 also allows advanced password and encryption management and the temporary lockdown of possibly compromised devices — rather than a complete shutdown and erase requiring the full reinstalling of software if the device is recovered.”

Is Good any good? I wouldn’t know as I don’t use it - but they look like they’re stepping up a bit with a 5.0 release. Any Good users here? How Good is good? Does Good do any good for you? Are any of my repeated word sentences any good? Is it good that I’m ending this post? Smile

Mighty Mites Step Up: High Capacity Cards From SanDisk

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

“SanDisk has busted out a couple of advances on two memory card fronts today, introducing some 6 and 8GB microSDHC cards, along with a 4GB Memory Stick Micro card (otherwise known as M2). Not one to miss an opportunity to seize the moment, SanDisk’s Jeff Kost says that with the new microSDHC cards, ‘any mobile phone with a compatible microSDHC slot will have just as much storage as the largest-capacity iPhone.’”

Knowing how small a MicroSD and M2 card really are, I’m absolutely amazed - these make my 8GB CF cards look like steam-age relics. While I’ll bet the prices of these will be in the stratosphere when they hit the street, I’d expect we’ll see them mass-market affordable within a couple of years. The new cards also bring decent storage capacity within reach of any device with an SDHC slot, though I wouldn’t exactly bring up the iPhone comparison just yet.

The iPhone Has A Lot, But Not It All

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

The Apple brand, history and reputation helped to create the all-consuming buzz that set the iPhone apart from other smartphones that offer as much, if not more, in the way of features. This article highlights some of what’s missing from Apple’s ‘all-in-one’ phone/iPod/Internet gadget and why, in the end, it really doesn’t matter.

HTC Europe Launches the P6300

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

“HTC, the world’s leading provider of Windows Mobile® devices, today announced the launch of the new P6300 PDA device for the enterprise market. With the full power of Windows Mobile, an intuitive large 3.5” touch screen and excellent connectivity options, it’s well equipped to cater for the mobile workforce. This range of technical features brings real business benefits for organisations employing the P6300, from improved customer service and faster service response times to increased productivity and effectiveness. Business users can communicate with colleagues and customers globally with ease, and integrate seamlessly with their existing IT systems.”

HTC Europe has just launched the tri-band GSM/GPRS P6300, which O2 also sells as the Xda Argon. It features 128MB RAM, 256MB ROM, a 400MHz CPU, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, IrDA, a 2.0-megapixel camera, a 3.5″ QVGA touch screen, and believe it or not, an SDIO/MMC slot. Unfortunately, there’s no Windows Mobile 6 Professional, so you’ll have to put up with yesterday’s OS.

Visto Announces Secure Corporate Email for Apple iPhone

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

One of the biggest holes in the iPhone right now is the lack of support for corporate e-mail. I know there are a lot of execs/corporate types out there that are going to chase after this phone in the next few weeks; and without the ability to get work e-mail, carrying the iPhone is going to be a problem for them.

How Would You Change Windows Mobile 6?

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

“While some of you have no doubt been running Windows Mobile 6 for a few months or more already (thanks, XDA developers!), the majority of the world is just recently getting its first taste of Microsoft’s latest mobile operating system from new devices like the Sprint Mogul and updates to others like the T-Mobile Dash. The critics have certainly been, um, critical of the new OS, to say the least — “evolutionary, not revolutionary” seems to be the general consensus — but until we’re allowed to behold the glorious light that is Photon, it’s the best we’ve got for now. Still, while WM6 has beefed up Office support and arguably improved the tethering sitch, there are a number of issues that users have been griping about for years which have curiously yet to be addressed. …so, what do you think: what could Redmond have done differently this time around?”

While I won’t hold my breath that Dell will be releasing Windows Mobile 6 for my Axim, some of you have been using it for a while. Though there have been some improvements, it’s not quite the leap some may have wanted. If you’ve had a chance to use Windows Mobile 6, what shortcomings have you found? As Pete Paxon over at Smartphone Thoughts suggests, “could it be that MS doesn’t include certain functions so developers can create these programs instead?” Interesting question. So, how about you? Anything you absolutely need changing or are the third-party applications enough?

The only REAL guide to playing back Mobile YouTube videos

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

“As has also been announced in my (latest) guide to playing back (non-Mobile) YouTube videos published some weeks ago, the YouTube folks have been working on a really mobile, non-flash-based version of their services and, as promised, have indeed come up with it some days ago…As there is a lot of plain wrong or contradicting information and a LOT of hacks out there, all just confusing Windows Mobile users, I’ve decided to publish the one and only REAL guide to this question.”

The drought has turned into a flood - from a point where YouTube and other flash-based video were difficult to view on Windows Mobile, we now have a number of options. The latest is from YouTube themselves, where a mobile version of the site is now up and videos (sort of) accessible. Werner “Menneisyys” Ruotsalainen has published a typically thorough guide on the ins and outs of this service - what’s possible, what you need, and how to go about it!
