Intel MID Prototype Video

Saturday, May 12th, 2007

“Of course, we can assume that even those of you who don’t fall in the aforementioned camp would still be interested in a sneak (video) peek at the MIDINUX operating system, which is proudly showcased browsing the internet, entering text, playing back a movie, and playing games. The finalized product could obviously change ever-so-sightly between now and then, but regardless, be sure to click on through for an in-action look at Intel’s Linux-based MID, and try not to become too envious, capiche?”

Intel’s positioning of the UMPC into two categories is certainly interesting - UMPCs running a full fledged OS at the top end, and Mobile Internet Devices at the lower end in terms of both capability and price. Here’s a video look at a prototype device, which should whet your appetite for more - MIDs are supposed to come in at the $500 price point that UMPCs were originally supposed to have gone for. At that price, and with those capabilities, would you be interested?

The Problem With DRM - It Is Just Named Wrong!

Saturday, May 12th, 2007

“People don’t like DRM, perhaps that’s just because it’s such a smelly word. HBO’s chief technology officer Bob Zitter thinks so, he wants to ditch the term DRM in favor of “DCE,” or, “Digital Consumer Enablement.” Speaking at the National Cable & Telecommunications Association show in Las Vegas, HBO’s top techie said the new term would better describe all the peachy ways that copyright holders and providers could dictate how consumers access content: “Digital Consumer Enablement, would more accurately describe technology that allows consumers “to use content in ways they haven’t before,” such as enjoying TV shows and movies on portable video players like iPods. “I don’t want to use the term DRM any longer,” said Zitter, who added that content-protection technology could enable various new applications for cable operators.”

There are just so many things wrong with that statement I don’t know where to even begin. Rolling Eyes

Xda Flame on O2 Web Site; MrPalm.com Posts Pictures

Friday, May 11th, 2007

“The first ever PDA-phone to boast a dedicated graphics processor, the Xda Flame features the advanced NVIDIA® GoForce® GPU for ultra-crisp graphics. 2 GB of onboard memory and an Intel® XScale® PXA 270 Processor running at 520 MHz, powers an unsurpassed user experience. Enjoy movies on the go or simply achieve more with the generous 3.6″ VGA touchscreen.”

Our favourite beast, the Xda Flame, is now up on SeeO2.com, complete with pictures, a Flash demonstration, and a specs list. Alongside all that is some eye-candy, courtesy of the folks at MrPalm.com. It’s worth noting that the Flame ships with Windows Mobile 5.0, although if recent news is anything to go by, there’s probably a good chance O2 will give it some Windows Mobile 6 love. Anyone here thinking of purchasing one?

HTC posts driver updates for HTC Hermes, Breeze and Artemis

Friday, May 11th, 2007

“HTC has recently released Windows Vista compatible drivers for its UMTS/HSDPA capable devices, namely the HTC Hermes (aka HTC TyTN) and HTC Breeze (aka HTC MTeoR). If you use your TyTN or MTeoR as you wireless broadband modem and connect it via USB to your PC, it can happen that Windows Vista doesn’t find the appropriate drivers. If so, you can download them now from HTC Europe’s support page to make Windows Vista working proper with your Windows Mobile Pocket PC.”

HTC has released a Vista-compatible modem driver update for the Hermes and Breeze, and a Micro-SD driver update for the Artemis. While there’s no confirmation that of these fixes will work for the same devices under other brands there really shouldn’t be any reason why they won’t, so if you own any of these devices I’d encourage you to get them (the fix for the Artemis is a must-have - the bug sounds really nasty). Now that HTC is into retailing Windows Mobile devices for themselves, here’s to hoping for quicker bug-fixes and updates!

Firefox To Go Mobile… Someday

Thursday, May 10th, 2007

“APC Magazine has an intriguing interview with Mozilla Foundation CEO Mitchell Baker on the state of mobile web browsers and Mozilla’s plans to develop a mobile version of Firefox. Baker says developers are working on a mobile browser, but says it’s a long term goal and nothing users should expect to see anytime soon. While the Minimo project is based on Mozilla, it isn’t an official product and it’s still a few (dozen) steps behind Opera Mobile when it comes to speed and performance.”

Well, it isn’t in the near future that we can expect to see Firefox on our mobile devices, but it is something that is apparently in the ‘works’. The article cites the benefit of using plugins in firefox to extend the user experience, which is something that may allow more flexibility in terms of what is possible in the mobile browsing experience (i.e. write a plugin instead of a full-fledged app). Time will tell.
