Daylight Saving is Over, Change Your phpBB "Clock"

Sunday, October 29th, 2006

I hope you all (for those of you for whom DST ended this weekend, at least) enjoyed the usual ritual of setting back your clocks. Don’t forget the one last clock you should set back: go into your Pocket PC Thoughts Preferences and set your timezone to be one hour back. In my case, Eastern Daylight Time was GMT-4, and Eastern Standard Time is GMT-5. (I can’t wait until the new website is launched, based on vBulletin, as it handles Daylight Saving Time automatically.)

My new HTC P3300 (Artemis) device arrived last night from Smart Mobile Gadgets. My first attempt at downloading the free Tom Tom map of my choosing was frustrating. Amazon Cell Phone Upgrades Available for Existing Cingular Customers

Friday, October 27th, 2006

For years, savvy cell phone shoppers in the US have known that Amazon offers aggressive discounts on many high-end phones, including Smartphones and Pocket PC Phones, but only with activation. For example, Amazon is currently listing the Cingular 8125 for $99 after rebates — that’s $150 less than what Cingular lists with a 2-year service contract. [Affiliate link] Of course, this assumes you’re good about rebates and don’t want one of the newer phones (either the iPAQ 6920, or the rumored 8525/Hermes or Palm’s 750).

What’s new, though — and I don’t know how new, but a PPCT reader recently spotted a post on techdeals.net and wrote in about it — is that you can now upgrade existing Cingular service through Amazon and get the same deal!

Presumably, this means you’d be renewing your contract, but nevertheless this is a pretty nice opportunity if you’re happy with Cingular and are looking to upgrade your setup. You’ll want to read the fine print, and take care if you have an unusual account (family plans, no-longer-available special deals, etc.), but it’s certainly another tool to use in your shopping arsenal. Very Happy (Alas, it doesn’t look like it’s supported for other carriers yet. Neutral)

GirlsGoneMobile Reviews The G-Tech Fabric Keyboard

Friday, October 27th, 2006

“Data entry has always been a sticking point for PDAs and smartphones. Not really something you can fault them for - mobile devices are designed more for information access and communication, with a portable form factor taking precedence over large screens and full keyboards…The G-Tech Fabric Keyboard is possibly the most portable keyboard of all. Making use of Eleksen smart fabric technology, it offers a full-size QWERTY keyboard in an impossibly-thin, washable textile that can be rolled up and stashed into a back pocket. Is this the future of mobile computing? Read on to find out!”

This reminds me of a certain Star Trek episode featuring a roll-up piano keyboard. Seems that fabric might make a suitable keyboard (Heck, I have a keyboard lying around here that is just a laser projected onto any flat surface), Anyone out there dying to roll up their keyboard and take it with them?
