Wanted: Developer to Create a Wizard/Apache/Hermes-Friendly SIP

Thursday, March 30th, 2006

If there’s one thing I don’t like about the integrated slide-out keyboard of the HTC Wizard and Apache series is the fact that frequently-used keys are special characters, including the numbers 0-9. There’s no Control key to make the Cut/Copy/Paste/Undo keyboard shortcuts, either. Of course, I haven’t mentioned the annoying fact that most times you want to use the slide-out keyboard, the soft keyboard panel pops up and takes up nearly half the… [more]

Going Back In Time With PocketCultMAME

Thursday, March 30th, 2006

Since the early days of Windows Mobile, many developers have tried to recreate the good ol’ days of coin-operated games on our devices, but few gave that true sense of nostalgia, or even improved on the original. Yes, there were a few underground attempts in making good emulators of games from extracted ROMs, but development became spotty, even for programs like MorphGear. Some big name companies even jumped in to cash in on the idea, such as…

PDAmill go VGA-aware

Thursday, March 30th, 2006

Many thanks to Bluetrane for letting me know that PDAmill has updated a number of their games to be VGA compatible, including GameBox Gems and Flux Challenge. I can’t, unfortunately, find a source for the news but I can confirm that the games do feature full VGA support as I’ve just been experimenting with the trial versions……

Switching Wireless Carriers to Save Money: Anyone Doing It?

Thursday, March 30th, 2006

“Last week, I offered advice for existing wireless customers on getting the best price for a new smart phone. One option I didn’t mention is switching service providers, and that’s what I ended up doing. I switched from Cingular to Sprint when I wanted to upgrade to a Palm Treo 650 but not pay the full price. I’ll explore that option this week. Why did I make the switch? I had a couple reasons…So I paid $300 for a Treo 650 from Sprint. Given…

HowardChui.com Reviews the i-Mate JAMin

Thursday, March 30th, 2006

“When it comes to Pocket PC’s, you usually trade features for size. A larger Pocket PC usually has more features than a more portable one. Well that used to be the case until the i-Mate JAMin arrived on the scene. With the JAMin, you get a device that has a 2.0 megapixel camera, 802.11b and 802.11g, 128MB RAM and all the other goodies you’d expect from a large, high end Pocket PC but in a package that is just slightly smaller than your average…

Bluetooth SIG Adopts UWB Solution, WiMedia Alliance

Thursday, March 30th, 2006

“The organizations that controls the Bluetooth standard today announced the next version of Bluetooth will see some big changes. In order to keep up with increased bandwidth requirements, the next version of Bluetooth will adopt the ultra-wideband (UWB) protocol, which uses multiband OFDM technology to transmit at speeds up to 100 Mbps over distances of 3 meters (about 10 feet).”
Bluetooth is answering the need for faster connection in small…

Price Drops in Mobile Phone Plans to Slow

Thursday, March 30th, 2006

“The price of cellular phone calls should decline more slowly in 2006 than in recent times as the duration of phone calls expands less rapidly, a top executive at Sprint Nextel Corp. said on Wednesday. U.S. operators have driven down the price of mobile phone calls in recent years as they tried to win new customers or steal each other’s subscribers in the fiercely competitive market, which had as many as six national operators at one point. But…

SmartMobileAssets Reviews Two BoxWave Screen Protectors

Thursday, March 30th, 2006

“The two screen protectors from Boxwave have always been a mystery to buyers of all devices. Exactly which one should I buy? asks any mobile electronic owner. Which one is best for me? What is the difference? Well here we go! Boxwave sent me one of each for my iPAQ 4700 and after a month of using both of them I have finally come up with the definitive conclusion comparing the differences between them and who they would beneifit.”

I’ve…

Your Must-Have Accessories

Thursday, March 30th, 2006

We all have our must-have software. Now what about our must-have accessories? I have a few essential items in mind that I feel no Pocket PC should be without.
The first is Pocket PC Techs’ WriteSHIELD screen protectors. I always slap one of these on a new Pocket PC before using it. Both the AG or C2 are barely noticeable, reusable, and…

Input Tips For Your Windows Mobile Device

Thursday, March 30th, 2006

“I’m an input junkie. I type in Dvorak on the desktop. I wrote an app to control the desktop mouse with an XBox 360 gamepad. I wrote all of the input bus drivers for the Sega Dreamcast. I once wrote a driver for a chording data puck because I thought the future of mobile device input was an input system that only someone as crazy as me would adopt…. What follows are a series of tips and tricks for Windows Mobile devices that you don’t have to…

Clinton Fitch Reviews Tweaks2k2 .NET

Thursday, March 30th, 2006

“Like any Personal Computer, most Windows Mobile users like to customize their device to better fit their personal needs. While most of these can be done via the settings within Windows Mobile itself, some are not. Some of these are buried within the Registry of your device, a place that is not recommended for the faint-of-heart or those who are not familiar with how the Registry functions. Simply put, one wrong move within the Registry of your…

Blogs to Riches - The Haves and Have-Nots of the Blogging Boom

Wednesday, March 29th, 2006

“By all appearances, the blog boom is the most democratized revolution in media ever. Starting a blog is ridiculously cheap; indeed, blogging software and hosting can be had for free online. There are also easy-to-use ad services that, for a small fee, will place advertisements from major corporations on blogs, then mail the blogger his profits. Blogging, therefore, should be the purest meritocracy there is. It doesn’t matter if you’re a nobody…

Apparently, someone has gotten ahold of a ROM for the i730 containing Windows Mobile 5.0 and leaked to the guys over at pdaphonehome.com. What is even cooler is that one of the ROMs seems to have the AKU2 MSFP update, and there are reports of DirectPush working .

Ironically, Verizon’s XV-6700 and Treo 700w, both of which came out-of-the-box with WM 5.0, are still waiting for the AKU2 upgrade…. Read More
